Who would be the audience for your media product?

- If you have a look at my reader profile, my intentional target audience was meant to be teenage girls. I have conducted a focus group to see what type of audience would suit my media product.

GENDERS AND AGES:

- 3, 16 - 20 year old females
- 3, 16 - 20 year old males

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF PLAYLIST MAGAZINE?

It's very bold, exciting and eye-catching. Everyone generally liked how it looked.

DO YOU LIKE THE POP GENRE? WHAT OTHER GENRES DO YOU PREFER?

The boys said no they preferred other genres such as RnB and rock.
The girls liked the pop genre however also liked other genres such as RnB.

This shows that girls are open to the pop genre therefore implies that playlist magazine attracts a more female based audience as most of them prefer the genre it's offering.

WOULD YOU CONSIDER BUYING THIS MAGAZINE? AND IF NOT WHY?

The boys said no and the girls said yes.
No because it looks too feminine and don't think it real suits the male audience.

To conclude the focus group shows that my audience for my media product are females aged 16 to 20.

How did you attract/ address your audience?

I attracted my audience by using eye-catching colours and words.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt about technologies such as photoshop and that it is easier to use in comparison to microsoft word or publisher. You can do a variety of things on photoshop which you wouldn't be able to do on publisher for example creating layers and it also has many tools you can use such as the selecting tool which is needed for most things such as deleting out parts you don't want .
Photoshop allows you to chose the canvas size which allows you to change the height and width of the page and was helpful to me so that the contents page was the same size as the cover page. You can create unique affects using gradients and opacity. I have learnt that you can rasterize the layer so you can move practically do anything the the layer using the tools.

I have never used blogger before which is quite a big technology, I learnt how to publish on blogger and how to upload slideshares, videos. Using the macs was at first difficult to use, I learned how to create tabs on the macs and where everything was such as safari.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

From my preliminary task I was unfamiliar with the photoshop software. I only knew the basics of photoshop for example using the shape and text tool and also reducing the opacity to give a see through object.

My music magazine that I have created shows clear progression as I have familiarised myself with the software. I have learnt how to edit out the background and edit the image on the front cover however in the preliminary task I just used a photo background and didn't edit the image. I have learnt how to structure my magazine better by using other music magazines to inspire me which has helped mostly for the contents page as in my preliminary task my contents page doesn't have a very good structure and there are a lot of blank spaces which make it look unattractive.
I have added details from real media products such as a barcode, price and date which I didn't add in the preliminary task.

Construction of contents page

PRIMARY PHOTOS

Here I dressed her in black as black is a good contrasting colour. Her clothes and makeup also consist of bright colours such as blues and pinks because I think they represent the pop genre well.

___________________________________________________________________________

I created this background by stamping brushes on the blank canvas. I then added a new layer with a white gradient and lowered the opacity, I experimented with the different affects and chose soft light.

I used the text and shape tool to write contents and issue 001 using the market deco font and create lines and circles.

I added the photos and selected around the issue 001 circle and deleted a part of the photo so that the photo shapes around the circle.
I underlined contents using the line tool and added a sticker at the bottom.

I added numbers in white text over a red square and a features box.

I finished off by adding the rest of the features/ text and the numbers.

Double page spread interview

Interview:

At what age did you want to become an artist?
I've always loved singing from a young age but only ever thought of it as a
hobby, I would say that erm I’ve always wanted to become an artist, I mean it’s a dream that most people have but I never thought that it would happen. I started making covers and putting them up on Youtube about 2 years ago. I only did it out of boredom and to see peoples reaction. I didn’t know that a record label would actually want to sign me. I was like so shocked! and excited.

What challenges have you faced in your life? How did you overcome them?
I had to face alot of criticsm in my life, like when your told you’re not good enough you know, and stuff like that errm... I got through most of it just by ignoring it.

What is your favourite movie?
It has to be Hunger Games, I love it.

What school stereotype do you think you would belong to?
Probably the nerds haha.

Who is your role model? and why?
Adele has an amazing pure voice she doesn’t need any props or dancers or any of that. All she needs is a microphone and it’s pure perfection. That’s the type of artist I would like to be.

What are your favourite colours?
Hmm...I like all the colours but my favourite would have to be...blue.

What would you be doing now if you wasn’t a singer?
I would be in a university lecture.

Give us your best joke.
Ok...let me think...right so a neutron walks into a bar and says ‘could I have a beer?’. So the bartender gives him one and he asks ‘How much would that be?’ and the bartender says ‘For you, no charge’.

Who is the most famous person you’ve ever met?
I have met Kim Kardashian, which was pretty cool.

What is your favourite food?
My proper British Fish and chips. They are just what I could eat all day everyday.

If you were stuck on an island with one person, who would you want it to be?
Harry Styles.

construction of double page spread

Chosen photo:

I cropped the photo into a close up of the image. I then edited the image by using the brush tool and select tool to enhance the colours of the image. I used the select tool to get rid of the surrounding background. I then added a new layer which consisted of a gradient of greys and white tones: I chose these colours so that it matched the theme of the front cover. In addition it contrasts against the image making her stand out in the process.

I used the shape tool to create a rectangle , I then changed it to free transform so that I could rotate it to put it in a diagonal position. I then layered it underneath the photo image. I used the text tool to to write 'SECRETS REVEALED' and ' ASK ME ANYTHING I'M AN OPEN BOOK'. The fonts I used were , Market Deco and Andes.

Experimenting:

I experimented with the stamp tool to see what affects it has:

I used this brush and used a pink colour to create a smokey looking affect.

Here I used a different shaped stamp. I used the stamp using different colours( such as  bright blues, pinks and yellows) lots of times to create a blochy background. I reduced the opacity to create this affect.

This one I didn't add any affects. I disliked this background as it was too vibrant and wouldn't suit the theme of colours from the front cover.

I used the luminousity affect on this one.

I used the lighten colour affect on this one.

I added a white square box using the shape tool. I wrote ' QUEEN OF POP HAS ARRIVED' in Market Deco font.

Magazine cover construction

Final Cover:

Construction:

I looked through my primary photos and decided to use a close up photo. This one was looked more professional than the rest of the close up's because her face looks more serious than the others. Also, the majority of the focus group said that they preferred close ups. In addition the music magazines I analysed used mostly close up photos and they looked much more affective. If I was to chose a long shot it would have to be a dominant pose.

Here I have brightened her make up using the brush tool, I had darkened around her eyes while zooming in to make it look less pix elated, brightened her eye shadow, blusher and lipstick. I tried to make her make up suit the colours of her clothes better by adding more red tones. I got got rid any frizz to give a sleeker image.

I created a triangular A for the masthead by using the selecting tool to remove the parts I didn't want.

I overlapped her over the masthead by using the select tool to delete the writing that was overwriting the image.

__________________________________________________________________________

Here I have experimented with different colours to see what affect they have.

This is a dark grey colour. I think the colour goes well with the picture however looks more like it would appeal to a rock genre and not a pop genre.

This is a gradient of light blue and white, however although it it suits a pop genre does not suit the image.

The second one of a red colour suits well to the image and is vibrant for a pop magazine, however also looks more of a rock genre.

The orange doesn't look attractive at all, also we know from the focus group that people didn't really find orange attractive. The second one of a gradient that consists of black and red looks really affective and goes well with the colour themes however also looks to much like rock genre colours. I think I should avoid dark colours and such as dark reds and greys as a background as they connotate to a rock genre. Lighter colours like light plums and light pinks will give away a pop genre and go with a theme.
This pink colour looks to feminine and would suit a younger target audience, it doesn't look modern enough.

I don't really like the background colour of these images because they look too edited and vibrant and would prefer a natural looking background so that it would contrast well with bright colours.

_____________________________________________________________________________

I brightened the image. I chose this background of grey and orangey tones as I thought it would make the text stand out.

I added 'exclusive interview' in black text and ' Fatima Ahmed' in a white format using the text tool. I then added a white rectangular box using the shapes tool to back the text.

Here I used the same techniques. I added more text using the text tool and some rectangles to make the text stand out.

I created a sticker using the shape and text tool. I created two circles, one smaller than the other and put the smaller one over the larger one. I included text and used different fonts, then rotated the fonts to appear like a sticker.

I added more text - 'my year to shine' using the text tool and 'top 10 hottest songs'. I made the 10 and speech marks larger by increasing the font size.

I then added the finishing touches such as a bar code, the price and date.

Mock ups

 CONTENTS:

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD:

My Photos!

Here I took close up photos, she is wearing plummy tones which I thought attracted a more female target audience.

Here I took mid shot photos. She is wearing a brightly coloured scarf which includes bright greens, blues and pinks, I felt these colours associated more with a pop genre as they are vibrant.

In these photos she has a strong pose however I disliked the lighting in this photo as her face look quite highly saturated, also it is less engaging then the close ups as she is looking more engaged or directed to the camera/audience.

Here are more close up shots. She is wearing subtle/ pastel colours in these photos as suggested by the focus group. I put flowers in her hair to give a more feminine appeal to the image.

Overall I felt that the first set of photos using the plum colours worked better as they were more stronger. The plum colours stand out better and looked more fierce and dominant photos whereas the pastel colours and props portrayed her as vulnerable looking.
